When I received the invite to attend the American Girl- Melody 1963: Love Has to Win premiere I was beyond excited. I grew up with an American Girl and truly loved the brand. When I was about 7 my mom got me the Samantha doll. I took care of her until the day I left for college. When I was first married to Ian, he told he got a script to play the dad in an upcoming American Girl Doll movie, McKenna and I told him he had to do it for our future children! To this day, McKenna is Mia and Penna’s favorite movie.
Mia and I planned to attend the premiere together for the American Girl- Melody 1963: Love Has to Win movie. I allowed her to open her first doll, Julie and had a blast getting ready. We arrived at the premiere and had so much fun getting mother daughter pictures on the red carpet (of course Julie had to be in the picture too)
Ian arrived with Penna just in time to see the movie. Marsai Martin who currently plays the adorable six-year-old daughter of Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross in the hit comedy series “Black-ish.” took on the very serious subject of the Civil-Rights movement in “An American Girl Story – Melody 1963: Love Has to Win.”
Martin plays Melody Ellison, a 10 year old living in Detroit who chooses to take a stand against discrimination and bigotry during the height of the Civil-Rights movement. Melody left us with the message to stand up for what is right even if it is hard or scary. It was a very powerful movie produced by American Girl and opened up a great conversation in our home about discrimination and civil rights.
The after party was held at the American Girl store at the Grove in Los Angeles. The girls entered the party and were surprised by the amazing gift bags. They each received their very own Melody doll. Mia and Penna had a blast running around the store and creating arts and crafts with the American Girl team.
We hope you enjoy the new movie from American Girl, Melody 1963 as much as we did. You can stream it on October 21st on Amazon in the US and UK.
